In 2008, the United Methodist Church has its quadrennial gathering to debate and update the Discipline of the United Methodist Church. This is the only body that speaks for our denomination. Please be in prayer for them as they gather in May 2008. The following prayer is a guide for you to consider.
PRAYER FOR THE DELEGATES
TO GENERAL Our Parent God, We pray for those who serve as delegates to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences. Bless them with openness of mind and spirit that they might hear the mind and heart of those who speak. Fill all with Your Holy Spirit, that they might discern and practice Your will in all interactions. We pray, O Holy God, that all who gather will commit themselves to seeking “the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” May You guide their actions so all that is done in debate, legislation, worship and community might be cloaked with a graceful and loving spirit. We pray, too, that Your church might be strengthened and empowered to offer the love and grace of Christ to all God’s children, that they may become disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Gift all who gather, and all who observe from a distance, the humility to accept the decisions made. May those who prevail do so with kindness and compassion. May those who fail to persuade be gifted with patience. May all the decisions and actions be dedicated to You, so that Your will might be done at this time and throughout the future of your Church. In the name of Christ, who calls all to ministries of redemption, transformation and reconciliation, we pray. Amen. |
